The MagnificatBible

My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name. And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him. He hath shewed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy: As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people: And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant: As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, who are from the beginning: Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us: To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy testament, The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us, That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear, In holiness and justice before him, all our days. And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways: To give knowledge of salvation to his people, unto the remission of their sins: Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us: To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.

Talking with God (words of Saint Catherine Labouré)Devotion

When I go to the chapel, I put myself before the good God and I say to him: Lord, here I am; give me whatever you wish. If he gives me something, I am very happy and I thank him. If you listen to him, he will speak to you too, for with the good God you must speak and listen. God always speaks when we go to him simply.

Do one concrete act of love for the person today without announcing it. If there is something to repair, take the first step: one honest sentence, not a speech.

I have a difficult decisionFor what you are going through

A whole night of prayer before choosing

Lord, I don't know which way to go. Give me light to see, freedom to choose well, and peace to accept what I cannot know yet. Not my will, but yours. Amen.

One step for today

Take a sheet of paper. Write your options, and for each one what draws you towards it and what holds you back. Pray over it for ten minutes, then talk it through with someone wise who has nothing to gain from your choice.

I'm losing my faithFor what you are going through

Help my unbelief

Lord, I believe; help my unbelief. If you are there, show me — in your time and in your way. Until then, I will keep the door open. Amen.

One step for today

Tell God honestly what you don't believe right now — aloud or on paper. Then do one thing that keeps the door open: read one chapter of a Gospel, or sit in a church for ten minutes. You don't need to feel anything.

I was betrayedFor what you are going through

Judas, Peter, and the disciples who fled

If you are in danger, your safety comes first: contact emergency services (112 in Europe) or a support line now.

Lord Jesus, you were betrayed, denied and left alone. You know this wound from the inside. Give me the grace not to let it harden my heart, and show me the next step. Amen.

One step for today

Before deciding anything about the relationship, write down what happened and, next to it, what you need now — safety, truth, time. Bring both to God in a short prayer.

I can't forgive somebodyFor what you are going through

Seventy times seven — and what forgiveness is not

Father, I cannot do this on my own. You know the hurt. Give me the desire to forgive, and then the grace to do it, one step at a time. Amen.

One step for today

Write the person's name down and pray one Our Father for them. You do not need to feel forgiveness yet.

I'm afraidFor what you are going through

Peter sinking in the waves

If you are in crisis, or thinking of harming yourself, please contact emergency services (112 in Europe) or someone you trust now. You are not alone.

Lord Jesus, you caught Peter when he began to sink. You know what I am afraid of. Take my hand. Give me courage for the next step only, and stay with me while I take it. Amen.

One step for today

Name your fear to God in one sentence. Then take one small step you have been avoiding because of it, and as you do, pray: Lord, stay with me.

I'm angryFor what you are going through

The temple, and the cross

If you are in danger, your safety comes first: contact emergency services (112 in Europe) or a support line now.

Lord Jesus, you were angry at what dishonoured your Father, and you forgave those who crucified you. Look at my anger. Keep what is just in it, heal what is wounded, and do not let me hurt anyone with it. Amen.

One step for today

Before you speak or write in anger today, wait, and pray one Our Father. Then say only what you would still be willing to say tomorrow.

I'm worried about moneyFor what you are going through

The lilies of the field

Father, you know what I need before I ask. Give me bread for today, wisdom for the next decision and the courage to ask for help. Free me from fear and from greed. Amen.

One step for today

Write down one money worry and one concrete step you can take this week: a phone call, a line in a budget, a question to someone you trust. Then pray the Our Father slowly, stopping at the line about bread.

I've failedFor what you are going through

Nets empty all night

If you are in crisis, or thinking of harming yourself, please contact emergency services (112 in Europe) or someone you trust now. You are not alone.

Lord Jesus, you met Peter after a night of empty nets and after his denial. You know where I have failed. I give you what I could not do. Show me where to cast the net again, and give me the humility to begin. Amen.

One step for today

Write down the failure that keeps replaying in your head. Under it write one thing it taught you and one small next step. Then put the page away: like Peter, you are allowed to cast the net again.

I feel lostFor what you are going through

The lost sheep

If you are in crisis, or thinking of harming yourself, please contact emergency services (112 in Europe) or someone you trust now. You are not alone.

Lord Jesus, you came to seek and to save what was lost. I do not know the way right now. Find me where I am, call me by name as you called Zacchaeus, and walk with me, even before I recognise you. Amen.

One step for today

Take a short walk without your phone and ask Jesus one question: where are you in this? You do not need an answer today. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, start by walking with him.

I am temptedFor what you are going through

Forty days in the desert

Lord Jesus, you were tempted in the desert and did not give in. When I am weak, keep me close to you. Lead me not into temptation, and when I fall, lift me up again, as you lifted Peter. Amen.

One step for today

Notice the time, the place or the mood in which temptation is strongest for you. Change one small thing about it today, and when temptation comes, pray the last line of the Our Father.

Someone hurt meFor what you are going through

Struck, mocked, betrayed — and still loving

If you are in danger, your safety comes first: contact emergency services (112 in Europe) or a support line now.

Lord Jesus, you were struck, mocked and betrayed. You know what was done to me. Heal what was wounded in me, protect me from harm and give me courage to seek what is just. And in your time, give me the grace to forgive. Amen.

One step for today

If you are safe, write down what happened and what it did to you, honestly and without softening it. Then say one short prayer for yourself. If you can, add one for the other person; if you cannot yet, tell God that too.

I'm illFor what you are going through

The pool of Bethesda

If you are in crisis, or thinking of harming yourself, please contact emergency services (112 in Europe) or someone you trust now. You are not alone.

Lord Jesus, you asked the sick man what he wanted. You know what I want: to be well. Give me strength for today, good people around me, and your peace in my body and in my fears. Into your hands I place what I cannot change. Amen.

One step for today

If you are ill, tell one person honestly how you are and ask for one concrete help. If you are seriously ill, you can ask a priest for the Anointing of the Sick. If you are well, visit, call or write to someone who is sick.

Work is weighing on meFor what you are going through

A night with empty nets

Lord Jesus, you worked with your hands in Nazareth and you met Peter in his empty boat. Bless my work today. Where it is heavy, give me strength; where it seems useless, give me hope; and let me hear your word to try again. Amen.

One step for today

Offer the first task of your day to God by name. At the end of the day, give thanks for one thing that went well, however small.

I'm worried about my childrenFor what you are going through

A father on the road

If you are in danger, your safety comes first: contact emergency services (112 in Europe) or a support line now.

Father, you ran to meet your son while he was still far off. I place my children in your hands. Protect them where I cannot, bring them home when they are lost, and teach me to love them as you do. I do believe, Lord: help my unbelief. Amen.

One step for today

Pray today for each of your children by name. Then do one small thing that tells one of them you love them — without a lesson attached.
