Who was Peter?
Simon, a fisherman from Galilee, brother of Andrew, called by Jesus and named Peter (“rock”). He is the most prominent of the Twelve in the Gospels and a leader of the early Church in Acts.

Scripture tells us
- He was a fisherman, the brother of Andrew, and was married (Jesus healed his mother-in-law).(Matthew 4:18; Mark 1:29–31)
- Jesus gave him the name Peter / Cephas, “rock”.(Matthew 16:18; John 1:42)
- He denied Jesus three times and wept bitterly; after the Resurrection Jesus asked him three times “lovest thou me?” and entrusted him with his sheep.(Luke 22:54–62; John 21:15–19)
- Jesus foretold the kind of death by which he would glorify God.(John 21:18–19)
Tradition holds
