After you read
What just happened?
Peter and six others went fishing and caught nothing all night. At daybreak a stranger on the shore told them to cast the net on the right side; the net filled with a hundred and fifty-three large fish, and the beloved disciple recognised that it was the Lord. Peter threw himself into the sea. Jesus had a charcoal fire ready with fish and bread, and gave them breakfast. Afterwards he asked Peter three times whether he loved him, and three times told him to feed his lambs and sheep — and foretold the death by which Peter would glorify God.
Key idea
The risen Jesus does not just forgive Peter's failure; he heals it, entrusts him with his flock, and calls him again: follow me.

- Jesus' affectionate greeting to the disciples from the shore.
- Charcoal fire
- The Greek word occurs only here and at Peter's denial in John 18:18.
- Feed / tend
- Jesus varies his words — feed, tend, lambs, sheep — but the charge is one: shepherd my flock.
- Gird
- To fasten one's clothing to be ready for work; when old, another will gird Peter.

One question to think about
If Jesus asked you the question he asked Peter, what would you answer — and what would he ask you to do next?
