What you will understand today

How the Holy Spirit shapes the everyday life of a Christian: his gifts, his fruits and the virtues.

In simple words

Christians receive the Holy Spirit in Baptism and Confirmation. The Catechism calls the whole Christian life a life in the Spirit: not a set of rules kept by effort alone, but a life in which God's own love is at work.

Tradition speaks of seven gifts of the Spirit — wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord — which make us docile to his promptings. And Paul speaks of the fruit of the Spirit: charity, joy, peace, patience and more.

The gifts are like the sails; the fruits are what grows when the Spirit is welcomed. They show themselves in ordinary things: patience in traffic, kindness at home, faithfulness at work.

Key Bible passage

Paul's list of the fruit of the Spirit — in the Latin tradition, twelve.

22But the fruit of the Spirit is, charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, longanimity, 23Mildness, faith, modesty, continency, chastity. Against such there is no law.

Go deeper

Paul contrasts the works of the flesh — enmities, jealousy, anger, quarrels — with the fruit of the Spirit. Note the singular: one fruit with many flavours, all coming from love.

The seven gifts come from a prophecy of Isaiah about the Messiah, on whom the Spirit would rest (Isaias 11:2). They belong fully to Christ, and he shares them with his disciples.

Living in the Spirit includes struggle. Christians still feel the pull of selfishness; the Spirit does not remove our freedom, but strengthens it, and every confession and every Eucharist renews his life in us.

Questions people ask

How do I know whether something comes from the Holy Spirit?

Look at the fruits: does it lead to more love, peace, humility and truth? The Spirit never contradicts Scripture or charity. For big decisions, it helps to pray and to talk with a wise Christian.

Are the gifts the same as talents?

No. Talents are natural abilities; the gifts of the Spirit are graces that make us open to God's guidance, whatever our talents.

What is the difference between the fruits and the virtues?

Virtues are stable habits of doing good; the fruits are the joy-filled results of the Spirit at work in us. They grow together.

A common misconception

Living in the Spirit means having extraordinary experiences.

In fact

The surest sign of the Spirit is charity. Extraordinary gifts may come, but Paul says that without love they are nothing (1 Corinthians 13).
