Who was this?

Born to a pagan family in Neocaesarea, he studied law and met Origen in Caesarea, who led him to Christ. He became bishop of his home city. Tradition says there were only seventeen Christians there when he arrived, and only seventeen pagans when he died. He was called the Wonderworker because of the many miracles told of him.

Patron of

  • desperate causes
  • protection from earthquakes and floods

When to ask for intercession

  • situations that seem hopeless
  • natural disasters
  • mission

A short prayer

Saint Gregory the Wonderworker, intercede for me in this difficult situation, that I may trust that nothing is impossible for God.

Written for cento53 as a simple personal prayer of intercession — not a liturgical text.

Historians debate

He is not in the General Roman Calendar; 17 November is his traditional date. Most of the miracle stories come from the Life written by Saint Gregory of Nyssa about a century later.
